Last I checked the United States of America was not invaded by a foreign force. We still have a democratic process and a black President sits at the white house. So I must assume that they want it back to the Bush years? I doubt it. They want it to the days of the lack of financial regulation, soaring market prices, and Bernie Maddoff. Really? Well most of that happened in the Republican era. Fittingly, the good old days ended with the collapse of the housing market while a Republican sat at the white house

I will go as far as to claim that the Tea Party is a scary organization, with views so far to the right, that it it is borderline fascist. It is anti labor, anti immigration, anti debt, anti government, anti black President. Centrist Americans are starting to see through the smoke and are seeing them for their radicalism and” fascism.

Most Americans are not comfortable with the phrase “take our country back” because the majority of America now is biracial and can trace roots to immigrant or slavery ancestors. Therefore, nobody wants to go back to the days of racism against the Jews, the Italians, the Irish, and of course the Africans.

Tea Party Republicans will be defeated at the polls for a simple reason that most Americans are not radicals. They are centrists who can decipher through the smoke to reach at the truth. Obama has won Iraq, he is winning in Afghanistan, he go Bin Laden, and he has stabilize the economic mess he found the country in.

But perhaps, the biggest reasons they will lose are because nobody wants to see a protectionist, fascist, and radical president.

An Economic Case for Immigration Reform

China is now the number two economy in the world!!! I has now passed England, Germany, and as I am
typing e almighty Japan for the second spot. It economy registered a second quarter value of $1.33
million USD. The main reasons for the growth are the massive labor force, weak human rights, and poor
environmental records.

I will be very brief on the human rights, because it does not exist in China. Basically you must obey the State at all times. In private, public, religious or otherwise. Incredulously, on the religious aspects, it is now allowing for Catholicism to be practiced by its citizens . Well, may be not so incredulous as it serves the State, when its citizens put more emphasis on the afterlife than their perilous day to day existence.

In terms of the environment, China abuses it almost as much as the US and it will soon be number one in offenses against nature. Coal is their biggest source of energy, but I am not complaining, as I really do not want China to draw all of their energy needs from nuclear plants. A fully nuclear China is much of a scare to the world.

Now, to the point of large population and its relationship with a growing economy. If we relaxed the borders and allowed cheap labor to enter the US, China would never be able to catch up to the US' staggering 14 million USD economy. An increasing labor force could mean thousands of new manufacturing jobs. I know that everyone wants new high tech jobs. But China got to number two not with high tech, but with low tech, back breaking, sweat shop, no bathroom breaks, 10 minute lunch break types of jobs.

I call for more immigration into the US and more low tech jobs to reverse the trends of mills to loft housing units. These lofts are not selling and their values are now low enough that entrepreneurs will flock to them and turn them back to producing shoes, clothes, and other consumer goods.

I am also a believer that the US will find a balance between human rights, and environmental concerns. However it will be at a cost to what we now enjoy. Per capita income could go from $40,000 USD to $30,000 USD, still well above China’s $2,000 USD. We will be forced to provide greater wealth care and welfare. Large US cities could go back into the rat infested slums of the early 20th century. But it would all be worth it. Immigration reform is all that stands in our way of maintaining our number 1 status for the next one hundred years.

The age of the Obamas

Blacks have come a long way in America, from slavery, to the presidency of the United States. We live in the times of the Obamas, but after nearly a year and a half, only few of us still stop to cherish this exceptional feat. Except of course, for the opposition, that is, all who are still too shallow minded in believing that a person’s color supersedes of his qualities or defects. They notice because are still hurting from their defeat and it is a demonstration of what a person of any race is capable of achieving if given the opportunity.

At first glance, it seems to be a good thing, that we are not always thinking about the fact, that out of a former enslaved race, rose a man who would became the leader of the so called free world. But, the fact that we do not notice, is a sad and dangerous thing. It means that a black person, in the eyes of the World and the American elites of all race, is still not yet presidential enough to hold a CEO title, get the higher wages, or receive the best medical care. The black person gets the benefits of the heavier prison sentences, and corporate downsizing only to be recycled as a low level staff in another role or another company.

We must never let it feel "too old" that a black man is the President of the United States of America. In the past year and a half, President Barack Obama, has successfully led fights against the Great Bush Recession, the Health "Fear" Industry, and the Wall Street Grand Casinos. But I see the formation of radical tea party movements and others alike, boasting in their boycott of the recent gains made by the the American people. Their agenda is to trip our triumph for their own benefit at the voting booths in the upcoming 2010 midyear elections. The fall elections will have vast implications in the choosing of the next American President.

In the age of the Obamas, we should take a moment to appreciate how far we have came. "Blago" is under investigation for soliciting personal gains in exchange for the appointment of the seat once occupied by President- -Elect Barack Obama.

Today, Roland Burris a black man, without the proper signatures from Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White, and was unceremonially denied entrance to the senate floor by Senate Majority Leader Dem. Harry Reid. In a time, when celebrities with no experience get nominated into the US Government, a proven black leader is kept out of the process.

Burris, born August 13, 1937 was the first Black person to hold the office of Attorney General in the State of Illinois. He has had a stellar career in government, and once he beats Reid, will become once again the only Black Senator. He has not been tied to any wrongdoing involving Governor "Blago", who by the way, has vowed to fight the federal charges against him.

The senate is so far acting within the boundaries of the law, but the Jesse White is not. He is defying the appointment of a seating governor. As for the Senate, once the Illinois Supreme court forces White to sign all documents, they will not be able to block Burris' entrance into the Senate Chambers. Any further maneuvers will be seen by all as unjust and unconstitutional. And by some extremists, as pure Racism.

The United States Senate is the most prestigious club in the land. Yes a ghost, because, once again "nobody saw nothing, nobody said nothing."

According to data made available by the FBI and the Boston Police, it is becoming more obvious that Cape Verdean lawless teens shoot to kill. What is our true ethnicity? How have we evolved? Where are we headed?

I met Aminah amid a disagreement brought upon by mistakes and misrepresentations by the Brockton Enterprise. I was mildly critical of her point of view, as printed by the newspaper, but I am glad to say that I made a mistake in my judgment as many many readers of the article. For details please read prior blogs at cvflafla.com.

I was present at a beautiful celebration this weekend that was organized by her loving family. I will only say this, it is clear where she gets her honesty, brilliance, and commitment. They clinched the title on October 14th after a convincing victory over Berdianos at Tolman High School in Rhode Island by a score of 3-1. The Goal scorers for Fidjus Terra were Tchatchu, Pina, and Ney. Additionally this past Sunday, Fidjus Terra Over30 “velha guarda” beat the Pumas of Mexico by 3-2 and are now headed to the RISL Over30 Cup Final against Inteligencia on October 28.

Fidjus Terra is now automatically qualified to compete in the Regional Phase of the U.S. National Over30 Championship set for the spring of 2008. The team will proudly represent our Capeverdean communities and the Rhode Island Soccer League Over30 in the national competition. This has been a historic year for Fidjus Terra Club, as they celebrated their 15 year anniversary this past September. Hundreds of people flocked to the PIC Park in Brockton to commemorate the two day tournament which featured top Capeverdean soccer clubs; such as Imigrantes and Vera Cruz from Florida.

In August 2007, Fidjus Terra Men’s Open Age team won the Massachusetts State Cup. In NELASA competition, however, they finished the season with only one trophy for most points during the 2007 regular season. Despite having entered the Playoffs and the Cup phases as the clear favorite to win it all, the team was not able to satisfy its huge fan base.

The Successes achieved by Fidjus Terra Over30 comes to me as no surprise and it maintains the first class “Soccer name” of the club. Being lucky enough to have played with most of the players, I can say that historically, this team features some of the best Capeverdean players in the United States. Therefore, I believe that they should have little trouble in winning the RISL Over30 Cup and then go deep into the Regional Phase of the U.S. National Over30 Championship.

Sam Araujo

Cape Verde Will Soon Produce Atomic Energy

Cape Verde was accepted as a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) during its 51st General Conference (Sep’07) in Vienna, Austria. But it warns that IAEA’ s final decision to allow atomic energy production, will be happen once key safety concerns are addressed and resolved. Among them, health welfare, public safety concerns, bi-product waste disposal, and anti-terrorist defense mechanisms. The European Union’s blessing and financial backing were keys to the success of this mission.

A report published in June’07 by the IAEA, states a pledge of nearly €7 million (Euros) to its Nuclear Security Fund (NSF) earmarked for African Countries. In total, the sum donated to date, is at $53 million (Dollars) by 26 counties and organizations since March of 2002. NSF was created after the terrorist attacks of 9/11 in the United States, to promote safekeeping of nuclear energy technology.
http://www.iaea.org/NewsCenter/News/2007/nuclsecafrica.html

Cape Verde, along with five other countries, will receive a portion of the €7 million to help their national governments create legislations and regulatory bodies to bolster safe nuclear programs. The path for Cape Verde to begin production of Atomic Energy has been laid out and it will illuminate its economic future. Cape Verde has been growing at a record pace since 2006, registering at approximately 7% GDP annual growth.

The economy is being fueled by a booming tourism industry and new housing construction. In order to sustain the growth necessary to accommodate tourists and developers, Cape Verde cannot continue to use fossil fuel as a primary source of energy. As shown in recent developments in Praia, where a deficient energy production and poor sanitary conditions and services by Eletra, Cape Verde’s main Public Works Company, setting protests, road closures and clashes between protesters and the authorities. The workers at Electra perform small miracles every day to keep the economy afloat with very little in terms of good working equipments.

Tourists are flocking to Cape Verde, gaining ground on the Canary Islands due to its proximity to the tropics from Euro and its vast natural yet untapped beaches and country side. But I can assure you, that Europeans’ ideas of rustic living must still require running water, dependable energy sources, and functioning sewer systems. All of which, will benefit with the introduction of a nuclear energy source in Cape Verde.
http://www.afrol.com/articles/24742
http://www.asemana.cv/article.php3?id_article=26578

Atomic energy is relatively cheaper than fossil fuel, and few modern day nations have successfully grown out of the third world without turning to it as the primary energy source. Cape Verde is doing the right thing by pursuing it through its membership with the IAEA. It greatest challenges will be in selling the idea of Atomic Energy as a safer, cheaper, and better alternative than fossil fuel to its public in general and the world. As a IAEA reporter covering the conference said, nuclear energy is a pathway to peace and prosperity, not one that should be feared as is the case for its weapons grade versions which cause wars and destructions of human lives.

Cape Verde has the backing of the European Union, the IAEA and NSF, the United Nations World Health Organization (WHO), and many Capeverdeans throughout the world, who want to see a prosperous Cape Verde.

S.A.
http://www.cvflafla.com/

Cape Verde's African Status in Jeopardy

A recent topic of a forum in http://www.forcv.com/ dealt with the location of the Cape Verde Islands. I know we have seen it in a world map and it is clear that it is off the west coast of Africa . More precisely, 500 km or 311 miles away from the coast at the 16 00 N, 24 00 W coordinates.

It challenged not only their location, but also their nature; which the author locates them in the Macaronesia Ecoregion of the North Atlantic Ocean . This is explained in full detail on Wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cape_Verde , where Cape Verde is associated geographically with the Azores (over 1,000 miles from Africa), Madeira (360 miles from Africa), and Canary Islands (67 miles from Africa ). The Word Macaronesia is Greek for "Fortunate Islands ."

I must admit, that this is the first time that I have heard the term Macaronesia. But ok, now that we know about it, let us look at its significance. We know that we are a people of many cultures and ethnicities, but primarily we are Africans and Europeans. Besides our appearances, what will tie us the most to our African roots now that this idea of Macaronesia is gaining ground?

Once you establish your beliefs, whatever they may be, you will need to see beyond the sentimentality of the location of Cape Verde and the significance of this new reality. A main implication is the calling for Cape Verde to become a part of the European Union. Former Portuguese Premier, Mario Soares has been a vocal proponent the Cape Verde induction into the E.U. Many others are sighted saying that Cape Verde is more European than many current E.U. member states; because of its freedoms, customs, economics, and culture.
http://www.afrol.com/articles/16293
http://rfmcdpei.livejournal.com/825014.html

The economic value of Cape Verde to Europe is a vastly untapped territory. Look at the pace of foreign investment coming into the country in terms of housing, tourism, and search of natural resources. Nearly one third of Cape Verde Islands is now owned by foreign investors, primarily, the Italians, the Chinese, the Germans, and the British. In agreements with foreign governments, the Cape Verdean government has reached proposals to begin natural gas explorations. And in land dealings, most of Cape Verde ’s once pristine beaches and mountains are now in the hands of hoteliers, Golf developers, and other tourist financiers. http://www.macauhub.com.mo/en/news.php?ID=1354

A military goldmine location is another reason for this new interest in Cape Verde . North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has for many years now, have been attracted by the islands for its geographical location in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean . In June of 2006, roughly 8,000 NATO troops were granted permission to conduct military war games exercises over Cape Verde ’s airways and waterways. In turn, Cape Verde is looking for better economic ties and the possible inclusion into the European Union.
http://www.nato.int/shape/issues/shape_nrf/sfjg_06.htm
http://www.defensenews.com/story.php?F=839315&C=america
http://www.afrol.com/articles/18640

Sooner rather than later, Capeverdeans will be forced to decide if we are Africans or Europeans. In the meantime, the Capeverdean government has already taken a stand and it is leaning towards Europe . This is where the Macaronesia idea once again becomes crucial, as Europeans will be sold this notion that Capeverdean are the same as the Azoreans, Madeirense , and the Canary Islanders. Meanwhile, African nations will soon cry fowl, because, they are in their own rights, looking to devise the plans to create a United States of Africa.
http://unitedstatesafrica.com/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_of_Africa

From an immigrant point of view, our hearts tell us that Cape Verde should remain militarily and economically independent. Or if a choice must be made, then we should remain African. The world is divided now into many economic clusters, such as: The North American Free Trade Agreement, The European Union, and The South Asia Free Trade Agreement, etc.

Capeverdeans do not feel that that have the luxury of time to wait for Africans to make up their minds and organize their intentions. The Cape Verde Select All Star Team will play the Brazil Select All Star Team, giving the Brazilians a chance to redeem themselves from the 2-1 defeat suffered last year.

This year, the Capeverdeans will be coached by Duia Brazao, a fantastic coach and individual who once coached me at Emigrantes das Ilhas. He is also a former drummer for the famous Capeverdean band Os Tubaroes.

Duia’s primary responsibility will be to win the game, but beyond that he will be forced to face the many critics of past CV Select Teams who believe that past coaches have favored teams from Brockton, namely, Fidjus Terra and Emigrantes. Her Uncle was a Cape Verdean of great pride, from Sao Antao. He kept his disease a secret from friends and family members other than his wife and two children. As Cape Verdeans, we need to take care of our health, and that means communicating our health history to our family members so that future generations are insured of a healthier and long life. Aurora wants to do her part in spreading the word by making a big statement and running in a national marathon.
Please, let's do our best to help out. It's not for her, but for all of us.She has a horrible time asking for money from friends and family, so sheasked me for some help in getting the word out about her fund raising for charity. And of course I knew I was going to write you all... then time passed and now I am in a major panic to get this note out to you in time for her to meet her quota by the deadline of September 15th for the race.I am passing the hat and asking you to go to her web page and donate whatyou can (or until it hurts.... )... but good karma in the bank is just asgood and who knows when (not if) I will need to draw down against that. This is Aurora's web page...http://www.active.com/donate/tntnyc/runaudirun Pass along to you all:"If 100 people donated just $10.00 each, that's $1000.00. My goal is toraise $2500.00 by September 15th. Tell everyone you know go to the web page.If you cannot donate by credit card, and want to send a check, make a check out to Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and then contact Aurora at her email address at: audibrit@yahoo.com as to where to mail it.
In our day and age, there is almost no one that hasn't been affected insome way by the insidious disease that is cancer. My Uncle Alex was not oneof the fortunate ones although he had the best doctors and the besthealth care his employer and his money could buy.Quite frankly, often there isn't the necessary funding in place for state of the art and cutting edge medical research. You can do your part by making a small donation, whatever you can. Remember, even $10.00 will go along way to helping save a life or extending a patient's quality of life. I am grateful for whatever you can do! My best to you! Having lost out in the first round of the NELASA Playoff, Fidjus Terra, honed in on a last chance to win a trophy in the NELASA Soccer League in 2007.
At the end of the first half, the game ended with the teams tied at 0-0. Fidjus Terra increased its intensity in the second half and came close to scoring several times. Walter hit the cross bar and DJ Adilson missed nearly from the heart of the penalty spot. Dinamo’s game plan was to counter-attack using Carlos Vaz as their point man.
Nearing the end of the game, Dinamo was reduced to 10 players through a direct red card to left back, Kim, shown by the referee. Dinamo sufferd another setback as their key players, Ze di Praia and Nati labored in and out of the game with an apparent injuries to knee and abdomen, accordingly. With no one on the bench available for substitution, they were forced to continue on.
In a surprise counter-attack, Dinamo had its only clear shot on net and they capitalized as Fidjus Terra defense was caught off guard. With 10 minutes left, it seemed to all, that Fidjus Terra’s season would end with a disappointing defeat. Fidjus Terra’s Head Coach, Nelo, made a desperate substitution with 5 minutes to go in the game by taking out Julinho and sending in Zico who had just arrived at the field. Nelo sent instructions ordering a 4-3-3 formation with a last attempt at trying for a score.
The decisions paid off as Zico earned a corner kick from the right side of the attack with two minutes left. Cassio sent in a cross into the area finding DJ Addilson who headed the ball into the net. The goooalllll was celebrated by the hundreds of fans who remained put awaitin a miracle. A minute later, Narciso, a second half substitute had a magical individual effort on bottom corner of the area and crossed a supperb ball into the path of Zico who headed in Fidjus Terra’s second goal. The croud took to the field to celebrate with Zico and the rest of the team.
Dinamo had an amazing spat of bad luck and suffered two goals within the span of 5 minutes. They have no one but themselves to blame for this stunning defeat. Fidjus Terra escaped with a victory on this day, but they left a lot to be desired on the field and they will need to step up their play in order to advance in the next round when they meet the winner of Tabanka vs. Alianca CV.
By S.A.
Checkout http://www.criolosports.com/index.htm for all the latest in Capeverdean Sports.

Fidjus Terra 15th Year Anniversary

Fidjus Terra Celebrates 15th Anniversary

The Capeverdean-American Soccer Team, Fidjus Terra, celebrated their 15th anniversary in style, on September 1st and 2nd at the PIC Park in Brockton, MA. It was a spectacle of soccer, music and food for people of all ages to enjoy.

The main event was a soccer tournament in three categories: Seniors, Veterans, and Women. The Brocktonians woman’s team won easily by 6-1 over their Boston counterparts. Fidjus Terra won their final match against Vera Cruz of Florida in the veterans division to lift the 1st place trophy. But in the seniors division, Fidjus Terra was beaten by a strong Emigrantes team by 2-1.

As good as the matches were on the field, they were eclipsed by off-the-field activities. Everyone got along and took pride in keeping the peace and “CV brotherhood”. This was highlighted during the trophies presentation, where the fans and players showed jubilee to all winners. It was great to be Capeverdean on these two days.

The hundreds that turned out for the events showed the city of Brockton that we know how to celebrate in peaceful ways. Most importantly, it served as an example to our youth that fun activities should never be associated with acts of bad behavior and acts of violence.

In all, seven trophies were handed out to the victors of the various events, but the most important one was a symbolic trophy “handed” by all, to the organizers and the city of Brockton. The symbol was a gesture of humility and fraternity shown by everyone.

Summer of Death

The city of Brockton is under a crime wave that is primarily affecting our Capeverdean Community.

Since Sunday August 12, 2007, four people have lost their lives in domestic disputes, according to the Brockton Enterprise.

Three out of four of the victims and perpetrators were members of the CV Community.
